skim 1.2.2 has been released

skim_1.2.2_improved_tear_off_lookuptable.png

With auto settle support to avoid overlaping with preedit window.

Double clicking the handler next to the "down arrow" button in the lookup table, you can toggle between embedded and tear-off(ed) lookup table. The handler can also be used to drag the window around.

Another bug fix version arrives. This time GUI appearance is the focus of this release and you will see a longer than usual change log list. Several improvements were also incorporated in this release. What's more, the scheduled features for next major release 1.3.0 will be proposed here too.

ChangeLog since 1.2.1

Input Window now honors KDE theme

This is the improved main window. Hope it would be considered more friendly...

  • improvement: inputwindow honors the current KDE style now, rather than a pre-defined pattern
  • improvement: reduced the size main window, now honor the size of font rather than the default icon size
  • improvement: get rid of the extra space in the main window on the far right
  • improvement: new option to set up tear off lookup table
  • fixed: tear off lookup table support (none-embedded lookup table)
  • fixed: the input window was not kept visible when qt built-in preedit-area is used
  • fixed: other input window (mainly lookup table issues) were rectified
  • fixed: drawing issue of inputwindow (lookup table mainly)
  • performance: use timer to reduce adjustSize calls
  • fixed: forced start didn't behave as expected (exit immediately)

You can download it in the usual place.

Planned Features for skim 1.3.0

skim 1.2.2 should (hopefully) the last bug fix release in the skim 1.2 branch. Now work is being done in the main trunk to implement more features which would not be merged into existing 1.2 branch. The list below gives you an idea about what you can expect for skim 1.3.0:

  • Splitted setup plugin for each IMEngine to their own package, so the size of skim package will be reduced, and you are not forced to have setup GUI for something you did not even install.
  • Native Transparent support (requires xorg 6.8.x) : you will be able to specify transparency for skim input window and main window, a setup UI will also be available in skim.
  • Refined Configure dialog: more usability improvement and other enhancement in the setup UI shipped with skim.

Other two features will be investigated, but I do not think they are very useful to most of our users, so your comments on this is highly welcomed.

  • Embedding main window into systray: something can be done in Windows XP (and Mac OS X, I heard that, not for sure).
  • A dedicated diagnose plugin: to help user check their SCIM installation and configuration of their system, for example, making sure locale setting and "magic" variables are set correctly...

These two features will eventually fulfilled, if not in skim 1.3.

Your opinion is important for me to decide on what will be implemented, so please give your feedback: leaving comments here or send email to our Mailing lists & IRC .
